Izmir and where blueness of the sea is accompanied by blueness of
the sky. Our Institution was named as Sidika Akdemir as a result of
her sons and husband’s granting the building to National Education
Ministry due to the will of the late Sidika Akdemir. It gives
education to gifted or talented students aged between 6-18 in Izmir
from November 2002 on and after the approval of National Education
Ministry, Special Education and Counselling General Directorate
which is dated on 24th September 2002 and numbered 3963.
Arts and
Science Institutions are independent special education institutions
which aim that preschoolers, primary and high school students who
are gifted or talented be aware of their individual abilities,
develop their capacities and use them at the highest level.
Students
become candidates for the Institution
by their teachers’ filling in the observation forms prepared in
fields of arts, music and general cognitive skills and sent to
schools in October every year. Students selected as candidates are
identified in two stages; group test and individual evaluation in
May.
The student
identified as gifted or talented after identification period begin
to get education after the approval of Special Education and
Counselling General Directorate.
Education is
given in 5 periods in our Institution. The durations of these
periods are determined and applied by the Institution according to
the capacities and interests of the students. These are orientation
period, support education period, period of making the students
realize their individual abilities, period of developing special
abilities and project period. Gardner’s theory of multiple
intelligences is the fundamental principal in all periods.
In
orientation period, Arts and Science Institution is introduced with
its surroundings and physical environment. It is stressed that Arts
and Science Institution is different from other formal and informal
education institutions and it is aimed that the students grasp the
vision of the Institution. In this context, they are informed about
the education model and the operation of the Institution. Students
are made aware that they are the students of Arts and Science
Institution. Team spirit among the students is built and they are
integrated with the environment and with their teachers and friends.
Sometimes, trips to faculty of fine arts, conservatory, historical
museums, scientific exhibitions and fairs and to some departments of
universities are planned. The aim of these trips is to observe the
interest areas of the students.
In support
education period, the main objective is to make the students have
communication skills, be at peace with themselves and the others
around them, have team spirit, be helpful, solve the problems that
they face, know to make research, reinforce their background
knowledge with learning strategies and apply them to create a
project.
In this
period, students join the activities of communication skills, group
study techniques, problem solving techniques, strategies for
learning, scientific research and study techniques, computer lesson
and English lesson. At the end of this period, ability areas of the
students will have been determined.
In the period
of making the students realize their individual abilities, it is
aimed that the students become conscious of their individual
abilities by doing some activities. At the end of this period,
students will have decided in which areas they will develop
themselves.
In the period
of developing special abilities, knowledge needed for creating a
project about subjects in which he is determined to be talented as a
result of the activities done until this period is given.
In the
project period, the student creates a project by benefiting from his
knowledge and his creativity after he starts to get knowledge in
fields of his special abilities. This period is the final stage that
a student attending Arts and Science Institution reaches. He will
transform the knowledge given to him until this period into a
product.
Individual
education and teaching is the basic principal in our
Institution of which mission is to give education to the students
who have the capacities of intelligence, creativity, art and
leadership, or who are more successful than their peers in some
academic fields, and who are identified as gifted by the experts.
During the education of the students, social and emotional
developments are considered together. The objective is not to create
an information monster but to educate balanced individuals from the
point of cognitive development and perceptional development. Humans
resemble to the countries. They have borders and surface areas and
have rules, flags and principles. Some are mountainous areas. Some
are barren whereas some are fertile. Some are narrow and the others
are vast as far as the eye can reach. You must go through strict
passport control while crossing the borders of some whereas you can
cross the borders of some without difficulty. As a result, I say
“Neither underestimate the people nor pay excessive attention to
them, my child. But try to understand them. What is the last point
that our borders reach? What is it and how may our surface areas
become larger?”
